Managing Coach Chaos with a custom Google Sheet
With this Google Sheet, I spend about 5 minutes laying out each game and precisely zero time time answering "where am I going” questions.
I created this to keep myself sane while managing a 14 person squad with 2 innings of required infield time and a limitation on bench time. After my first game migraine, I decided to whip up an easier way. After a year of it working out well for me and some friends, I decided to share it with anyone who wants it.
PRE-SEASON (20 Minutes):
Enter your player roster and parent information into highlighted columns in the Data tab.
Enter as much or as little as you'd like with regard to contact info.
Don't don't mess with the positions listed unless you know what you're doing.
PRE-GAME (5 Minutes):
Create a new tab for each game by clicking the "New Game" button at the bottom of the sheet. (do yourself a favor and leave the original intact and re-name each tab with your opponent and date.)
1- create your batting lineup by clicking each position in column B. Doubles will highlight yellow.
2- choose a position for each player by clicking the inning box that crosses their name. You don't need to do this in any particular order. HOWEVER - I choose my pitchers, catchers, first, and shortstop, for the entire game.
3- fill in each position by number for each inning. Players sitting on the bench are assigned a number over 9 for baseball and 10 for softball. The Infield and Bench columns will track innings at each location for each player. This is a requirement in my league, yours may not require it but it is good to know regardless.
***I also add some Keys to the game - the kids will see this twice an inning.
When you're all set up, print it like you would any other document. The pagebreaks have been set to fit what you want the kids to see on one page.
Print 3 copies - (one as a lineup card, one for your pocket, and one to hang up in the dugout.
GAMETIME:
The opossing manager gets a copy. I coach the youngins and don't mind sharing who is going where throughout the game. If that is a concern, simply rip the lineup off and hand it over.
I read off the 'keys to the game' prior to the game and hang the lineup.
Changes, if any, are made on the clipboard copy so everyone can see what is going on and are reflected by the scorer in the book.
POST GAME:
I'll also throw some player notes in there - acknowledging the intangibles is important and I like to record them so I can bring them up later. Ocassionally, I'll go through the scorebook and add what happened in each at bat to the SeasonStats tab, some kids dig knowing their stats, others, not so much. I don't make a big deal of it. For example, last year, I had a kid not whiff the entire year....pretty cool, I was glad I knew heading into the last game so we could recognize that achievement.
